A private investigator or PI, private detective or private eye are hired by companies individuals or companies to undertake investigatory type work, including corporate due diligence during mergers and acquisitions, by local authorities, solicitors and insurance companies for suspected fraud and matrimonial investigations relating to adultery in civil cases or child custody where bad behaviour is believed to be present.
Private investigators may also conduct a period of surveillance or background checks to establish information about an individual, group or business. In each case Private Detectives are required to remain within the scope of the law and when working for local authorities within The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA)

Licensed Private Investigators (LPI's)

Currently in the UK Private Investigators do not require a license, however the Security Industry Authority (SIA) have endorsed a qualification in preparation for this sector being regulated. In the US many states already require private detectives and private investigators to be licensed and depending on local law, they may also carry firearms.

Becoming a Private Investigators (PI)

Currently it is believed that there are over 10,000 private investigators in the UK working freelance or for risk management and surveillance companies. Many private investigators come from law enforcement or government agencies such as the security services, military or police and have years of experience in corporate intelligence work which involves keeping detailed reports and writing statements that can be used in a court of law.

Private Investigator Training:

If a private investigator does not have a background in intelligence, the ministry of defence (MOD) or law enforcement then they would normally undertake some form of investigation or surveillance training prior to working in this field. Courses are normally delivered as specific disciplines such as foot and mobile surveillance, electronic surveillance, counter surveillance and intelligence training.
